“Don’t let them take me to the hospital…” were the last words my mother ever spoke to me.
Critics argue that Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) was a byproduct of risky gain-of-function research funded by U.S. agencies. They contend that Dr. Anthony Fauci bypassed federal oversight pauses by routing grants to the Wuhan lab in China. To date, neither Fauci nor any other members of the United States Government have been held accountable for their alleged roles in this affair.
These same critics argue that COVID-19 was used as a pretext to expand government powers around the world at an almost unprecedented rate. They contend this was accomplished through a combination of state overreach and coordinated media messaging. From this perspective, governments pressured social media platforms to censor dissenting views, discouraged alternative treatments, implemented financial structures that critics believe compromised care, and shut down key sectors of the economy—measures opponents argue were designed to induce compliance through economic and psychological pressure.
Unfortunately, many people fell victim to what many critics call propaganda, resulting in their acting against the wishes of their own loved ones because they thought they were “doing the right thing.” In the case of my own mother, she was transferred to a hospital against her wishes and placed on a ventilator resulting in the mechanical pressure of the ventilator further straining her lungs, which were already severely compromised by COVID-19’s fluid buildup, and further reducing her ability to breathe. Sadly, hospitals throughout the United States were overly aggressive with ventilator use with COVID-19 patients. Had the medical staff reviewed my mother’s medical records prior to rushing to put her on a ventilator, they would have seen that my mother should not have been exposed to the selected anesthetic. The result wound up being extreme kidney damage necessitating kidney dialysis while she was ventilated. Even then, the damage could have been overcome with a tracheotomy, which would have allowed the cessation of sedatives needed for the intubation, giving her kidneys time to recover. Sadly, the medical staff recommended ending life support and the family member who brought her to the hospital, and who had filled out a Designation of Health Care Surrogate form during admission, followed the poor recommendation.
Prior to entering the hospital, she had been making forward progress with her recovery and was fully cognitive. While she was admittedly sluggish and weak from the disease, she was by no means in a life-threatening condition. The hospital admission likely cost her life.
Will Americans ever know the full extent and role of government involvement with COVID-19? Will Fauci ever be held accountable for his alleged actions? Will those responsible for the pandemic ever be held accountable? Will governmental processes be put in place to prevent such potential government overreach from occurring in the future? I may not have the answers to these questions, but I do know that I no longer have a mother as a direct result of how the government handled COVID-19.
